Lacoste
Rene Lacoste first hit the tennis scenes in 1927 when he and his team mates "The Musketeers" took the Davis Cup from the all conquering Americans. This great feat was also matched by winning the French Open 3 times (1925, 1927 and 1929), Wimbledon twice (1925 and 1928) and two US Open titles (1926 and 1927). The Lacoste crocodile was born in 1927 when at the Davis Cup Lacoste made a bet with the French captain that if he won the important clinching game then the captain would buy Rene an alligator skin suitcase. Lacoste obviously won and earned himself the nickname "the alligator". Lacoste began to wear an embroidered crocodile on his blazer thus creating the now famous Lacoste logo (and possibly without even knowing it!)
Six years after first wearing the signature crocodile logo on his clothing Rene Lacoste and Andre Gillier developed the first branded shirt, worn originally for tennis this revolution soon grew rapidly and included sailing and golf among the brands other early uses. The shirt was revolutionary as it was a slightly different shape to the usual shirts worn for tennis, but also included a ribbed collar, short sleeves and was made of a much lighter material, very similar to the very one used today with the famous Lacoste polo t shirts and shirts.
As the craze took off so did the Lacoste business and before long Lacoste were dominating the market and today can boast Lacoste trainers and footwear, Lacoste fragrances, eyewear, watches, Lacoste luggage, Lacoste clothes and accessories and even a professional sportswear range that is generally still seen on the tennis courts that originally made Rene Lacoste the famous champion and innovator that he is today.
