Pringle has a unique place in British culture and the international world of luxury fashion knitwear. It is one of the oldest names in the scottish borders, the birthplace of the British knitwear industry. Founded in 1815 by Robert Pringle it became one of the first luxury knitwear brands in the world, having expanded throughout Europe, the US and Japan during the 19th and 20th centuries. Pringle has been knitting cashmere since the 1870s and created the term knitwear when a knitted garment was worn as outerwear, this became an instant success and a trend that has lasted to this day. It is also credited with the creation of the intarsia design known as the argyle pattern which became popular with the Duke of Windsor and the fashionable set of his time. Another Pringle innovation saw the transformation of a sporty two piece cardigan in the 30s into a fashionable new item called the Twinset. This was teamed with a single string of pearls and an icon of classic British style was born. Pringle has been a favourite of the stars and high society since the 1940s. Original champions of the brand include Jean Simmons, Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot and many more. Today, Pringle is worn by stars such as Guy Ritchie, Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman and many more. After three centuries of knitwear and glamour pringle started a new chapter in March 2000 with a new brand vision dedicated to restoring the luxury fashion heritage of Pringles rich past and continue the tradition of innovation, authenticity and glamour. Testament to this was the appointment of Clare Waight Keller in 2005 as Pringles first creative director. Her collections are now presented during Milan fashion week.
