We’ve all seen various desert boots over the years, and since their original popular phases in the 1940s and 1950s they’ve been available in a variety of guises – namely desert boots or chukka boots. Usually made from suede or leather with a crepe rubber sole the desert boot is a signature design of Somerset shoe makers Clarks Originals. Their design doesn’t change the face of fashion or re-invent the wheel, but it does offer a functional and comfortable boot. They stop at your ankle (not above) and usually feature two or three eyelets on either side of the tongue, making them perfect smart or smart casual shoes.
So, if you’re trying to achieve that smart look you’ll be matching your Clarks Originals boots with a pair of chinos in a tonal colour or a dark pair of straight leg or skinny jeans. When choosing your chinos or jeans make sure that they’re a very ‘clean’ pair, so try to avoid any additional detailing, distressing or washing and ensure they’re quite plain looking as this will add to the smartness of the outfit. Make sure you put a slight roll in your hem, or if you’re feeling really on trend why not roll a little further and don a pair of colourful socks to catch the eye. On top you have a variety of options here, so do what you feel is best, as long as it isn’t a sporty track top or hoody or a graphical t shirt then pretty much anything goes. For this time of year consider a block colour shirt with a button collar underneath a nice piece of knitwear or a cardigan. Depending on the weather finish this with a duffle coat, trench coat or mac – and if the weather is wet take care to weather-proof your suede desert boots first!
Clarks Originals are available at Mainline Menswear for the spring summer 2013 season in a variety of colours and materials including leather and suede. Expect to pay around the £80 – £90 mark for a pair of desert or chukka boots from Clarks Originals.
