Stone Island was created in 1982 as a secondary collection of clothing from Italian designer Massimo Osti, founder of CP Company.
As a man with a passion for textiles, he spent time researching functional materials and different treatments whilst cataloguing the effects, making the brand somewhat of a laboratory for testing new materials and treatments to such an extent that these are now the label’s defining characteristics.
Surpassing their 30-year anniversary and having spread across Europe, Stone Island is now synonymous with the compass patch on the upper sleeve of their products as a mark of quality. Such quality can be seen from this season’s Panama jacket and its intricate detailing.
The bright blue hooded jacket is woven from linen yarns with cotton, nylon and polyester giving it a unique structured texture. An impressive feature of this jacket is its relatively strong rain and wind resistant qualities which are achieved through a resin treatment process. This is in spite of the complex multi-tone colour that Stone Island has achieved through their double dye technique.
-2 large press stud flap hip pockets

-Detachable compass badge
-Sewn eyelets & button cuffs
Stone Island’s production is according to them “An on-going investigation, thorough and without frontiers, on the processing and ennobling of fibres and textiles”, all of which lead to a constant discovery of new production methods, never seen before in the clothing industry.
The result of this extensive process is a jacket which resembles the classic silhouette of a parka jacket, however modernised with the shapely crevices introduced by SI’s advanced technological features, this includes the removable hood with a peak feature at the front.
Stone Island is noted for high quality garments and has signature speciality items such as hooded jackets, sweatshirts, wind-breakers, knitwear and parkas. Usually the label focuses on lightweight goods with functional characteristics and has recently progressed to focus on reflective and weather-proof items. The Panama jacket is an example of this innovation combining the two qualities and adding them to its vivid blue colouring to make it a perfect springtime jacket, capable of dealing with the adapting weather.
Stone Island’s SS14 is based upon the notion of bringing bold colours into your outfit as per the campaign video (below) and to style the Panama into your outfit you could contrast the bold colouring with meek understated colours, making your Stone Island jacket a key piece in your wardrobe this spring.
