Oakley: The Valentino Rossi Collection
Californian brand Oakley are world renowned for their outstanding eye-wear products, technologically and stylishly ahead of the times. Started from a small garage and a meagre 300 dollars, Oakley has grown to become a public company and part of the giant eye-wear group Luxottica who also control the likes of Ray Ban.
Creator Jim Jannard is still a prominent figure within the company whose aim had always been to challenge the status quo in the eye-wear industry. This mind-set led to an ambition to improve the options available for consumers; subsequently their name has gone on to become a mark of excellence in the industry in terms of eye protection, comfort and style.
Well recognized for the O-logo on the frames of their product, Oakley’s prestige is demonstrated by its extensive list of sporting affiliates. One such athlete in their repertoire is 7-time world Moto GP champion Valentino Rossi. The Italian is one of the best known sportsmen in the world and having become a strong ambassador for the brand, he has now got a range of his own to celebrate
“The Doctor”- as he is affectionately known- has won 7 World Moto GP Championships and as a result he can claim to be one of the sport’s best-ever competitors. This legacy helps Oakley strengthen the brand who simultaneously produce the most stylish and functional sunglasses available.
Rossi inspires Oakley’s latest Garage Rock and Frogskin frames, stocked here at Mainline Menswear. Ultimately him and the brand are joined by the shared characteristic of being able to push performance to the limit. The O matter frame material increases grip in response to perspiration as opposed to usual materials which become slippery. The wrap-around frame design ensures ultimate stability for use during sport, again, a comforting aid to the athlete. The plutonite lens filters 100% of harmful light from the eye whilst glare is reduced by the iridium coating. Finally, the signature curvature of the Oakley lens protects from physical obstructions such as grit, dirt and debris.

Valentino Rossi signed a multi-year deal back in 2011 and the 35-year-old’s fledgling career continues to succeed in line with Oakley’s, whose prestige in fashion is demonstrated by Google’s latest move to use the brand as a way of making their Glass technology product more appealing to fashion savvy electronic consumers, further enhancing Oakley’s cutting edge image.
An aspect of Rossi’s character is evident from the coloured logo’s on both of the sunglasses’ stems; a personally designed touch which hints at the motorcyclist’s outgoing personality. The Garage Rock sunglasses are an aesthetically pleasing design with a small piece of detail inspired by an electric guitar, this model is more of a fashion glass than the Frogskin. With the signature Rossi initials and racing number engraved on the inner ear stem, the latter is much more of a traditional sport frame and comes with an original logo design.
