Fred Perry x Space Invaders
British heritage brand Fred Perry has released an early treat for the Spring/Summer season, teaming up with Japanese gaming developers TAITO to produce a nostalgic new collection in the colours of Space Invaders, the retro game which revolutionised the electronic industry.
The capsule contains 4 pieces of carefully designed clothing, all of which you can find online now at Mainline Menswear.
Legendary Space Invaders was once an indispensable part of the technicolour arcades of British seaside towns, the same places where Mods- who have always had a close affinity with the Fred Perry style- would gather in big numbers to ride their scooters on weekends. With that in mind the latest collaboration seems like a natural pair-up.
In 1978 the arcade game became an instant global phenomenon and a memorable part of the subsequent techy 80s era. The pixelated enemy alien from the game has actually become a pop culture icon in itself and is often used to symbolize the video gaming genre as a whole. Such a status perfectly aligns it with Fred Perry’s ideology of creating products with a talking point, endearing the brand to a number of niche movements in the process, such as their collaboration with Bradley Wiggins which captures the imagination of new age Mods and fans of cycling.
In Fred Perry x Space Invaders, two icons of 80s culture join forces to present a collection which is ideal for gaming fans or else those with a quirky edge to their style. Brightly coloured prints are a perfect contrast to the timeless and uncomplicated profiles by Fred Perry, such as the twin tipped polos for example.
The classic cotton pique tennis shirt is re-imagined with a neon pixelated laser cannon and alien frontal design. Retaining the definitive construction details such as twin-tipped ribbed neck and cuffs, and a two-button placket. Styled and ready for everyday street or casual wear, it’s finished with the specially designed Space Invaders embroidery on the back as well as the traditional brand logo. This polo arguably looks best combined with quite a basic outfit so to highlight its detailing. A pair of block coloured jeans, a thin spring jacket and some versatile footwear such as Converse could be the ideal combination.
Fred Perry maintains a strong tradition for prominent collaborative projects each season and the latest bears some similarities to the Pac Man edition created a couple of year’s ago. Projects like this help the brand to add fresh impetus to their designs and shows a creative forward thinking edge which keeps them constantly on the cusp of changing trends.
