Collaborating for a second season, Dutch designer brand G-Star RAW and music producer Pharrell Williams have created another eco-friendly capsule collection, made from recycled materials sourced from the sea.
The line, which creates clothes by shredding down recycled plastic and spinning it into usable yarn, is the pioneering and world exclusive idea of the Bionic Yarn company which Williams himself owns a stake in.
G-Star RAW is best known for the unique raw wash of their denim jeans, but also their distinctive military aesthetic. RAW for the Oceans is a project which further enhances their dynamic reputation, offering a comprehensive modern collection of clothing using a brand new technique.
Pharrell continues to expand his personal portfolio outside of the world of music with fashion and philanthropy being two of his biggest fortes. RAW for the Oceans combines both of those personal interests adds to the experience he already has working with adidas and his own labels Ice Cream and Billionaire Boy’s Club.
Initiated to bring a mass awareness to the problem of marine plastic waste in some parts of the world’s sea, the RAW for the Oceans project is comparable to nothing else in the current fashion industry.
In partnership with Bionic Yarn, the Vortex Project and Parley for the Oceans have gathered roughly to tonnes of bottles and waste plastic sitting on the sea floor, eventually it has been turned into a range of t-shirts, jackets, denim and caps, compromising none of the in-house G-Star RAW quality or style.
Presented in a muted color palette with maritime patterns and graphics featured throughout. This season, we see the return of Otto the Octopus as well as all-over water prints, which lend a lighthearted vibe to a very serious cause.
Raw for the Oceans has a strong casual element to its designs with three varieties of hoodies this time around; two zip ups and one with a diagonal shoulder zip. Each item has a different print, two of which are all-over. The fabric is a soft sweat style woven from Bionic Yarn, ideal for combining with simple t-shirts and a structured pair of jeans like the Arc style by G-Star RAW.
The first RAW for the Oceans drop has been released during March, with a second of 2015 scheduled for May.
