Original Penguin is an American clothing line that was introduced in 1955 by Musingwear, a Minneapolis based underwear and military garment manufacturer, it then launched the Original Penguin golf shirt in the United States. After this the company was said to be the originator of the golf shirt.

In 1954 the Munsingwear salesman that was covering the northeast coast brought a fluffy stuffed toy penguin to a meeting in Minneapolis, this is where the logo and brand name originated from. This was the deciding meeting to create golf shirts to go up against Lacoste’s popular shirts. The Musingwear golf shirt added an under-arm “action gusset” and moved the pocket to the left breast to avoid interference with the swing. After the meeting artist Len Birnbaum returned to Chicago and within 24 hours had sent sketches up a proposed new logo to the Musingwear executives, the new logo was then adopted and the shirts hit the market at a cost of £3.25.
