How to Dress for ‘Meet the Parents’

Written by Eleanor | 27/10/2016

Meeting your partners’ parents is a time that will eventually come around for every man. Whether you’re still in college, have just started a job or are comfortably middle aged, nothing changes the nervous feeling you’ll have.

This is a time when making a good impression is very important. So you’re going to want to dress well to at least allow them to think you look good before you ruin it all by talking. At Mainline Menswear, we’ve devised the perfect outfit for you to ‘meet the parents’ in.

A few quick tips

Firstly, dress for the occasion. If you’re going out for dinner wear something different to what you would if you were taking the dogs for a walk. You’ve got to look the part and realise that being smart is all well and good, but wearing a dinner jacket to a rodeo will make you look like an idiot.

Secondly, don’t go over the top. Yes you want to make a good impression but you don’t want the parents to think that you’re trying to hard. Contrary to popular belief you can look too smart at certain events, so just take into consideration what your partner is wearing, and try and match that.

Some outfit suggestions

If you’re just going round to their house for dinner, which is a very common option, you need to dress for a night in, but also be smarter than usual. This means combining either jeans or chinos with a pressed shirt.

Instantly the shirt makes you look like you’ve made an effort rather than just thrown on any old t-shirt. And chinos or dark jeans are an excellent accompaniment. Depending on personal factors, either match this outfit with a knitted pullover, or a blazer for a smarter look.

If you’re going to be doing something outdoorsy, remember that your outfit also needs to be practical. Choosing a stylish coat like this Alpha Industries Injector jacket demonstrates that you know fashion, and you can also pull it off well. Another option would be this Armani parka, the dark navy being it can be paired with almost anything.

Parents 3 Parents 2

One of the main things to remember when meeting your partner’s parents is to be confident. They will instantly be able to tell if you’re nervous – so relax, know that with our help you’ll be looking good, and make your first impression.
