You’ve probably noticed that the Olympics are starting soon. If not from the blog posts we’ve been producing, then at least from switching on the news once or twice. The opening ceremony is on Friday, and following that the events will begin.
At Mainline Menswear, we’ve had a look at all the male athletes who are attending from around the world. Many sporting style icons will be present in Rio. But here’s our list of the five most stylish male athletes attending the Olympics this summer.
Usain Bolt – Jamaica
Everyone has heard of Usain Bolt. The fastest man alive holds the world record for both 100m and 200m, and isn’t ready to quit yet. He is ready to compete for Jamaica in Rio and has openly said he will be disappointed if he doesn’t win gold again.
Not only is Usain Bolt well known in the sprinting world, but he is also famous in the fashion industry. He is an ambassador for Puma and has his own line with the sporting brand. From his yellow and green kit on the track, to sharp designer suits at award ceremonies, Bolt can pull off almost any look. It is clear his place as one of the most fashionable Olympians is well deserved – yet another Olympic triumph for the sprinter!
Louis Smith – Great Britain
From Great Britain, Louis Smith will be competing in the gymnastics, specifically the pommel horse. He has two bronze and two silver medals to his name currently, so is hoping Rio 2016 could be his year for gold.
Not only is Louis a star in his GB leotard, but also is recognisable on the streets for his fashion choices. He has already stated that after his gymnastics career is over, he wants to start his own clothing line. He is a huge fan of the fitted suit, often paired with a bowtie as a quirky extra. Louis is also well known for wearing skinny jeans with long sleeved t-shirts – probably because they show off his physic perfectly.
This could be the last Olympics for the 27-year-old, but he won’t disappear off the scenes that easily. Who knows, 2020 could be the year of the new Louis Smith fashion label – watch this space!
Linus Butt – Germany
Linus Butt is a field hockey player, from Kempen in Germany. Not only is Linus Butt a star player in the German hockey team, but he is also a medical student and a style icon around Germany.
You probably haven’t heard of him before, especially if you’re not a hockey fan. However, Linus Butt is known for turning up to the changing room in smart tapered jeans, and button up shirts. Like many German’s, fashion is at the forefront of his mind. In his local town of Kempen he holds many sponsorship deals with unique fashion outlets.
Maicol Verzotto – Italy
One of Tom Daley’s main competitors in the 10m platform diving, Maicol Verzotto of Italy will be springing into action this summer. He was the first Italian diver to win a medal in synchronised diving in the World Championships, and is hoping to continue his success in Rio de Janeiro.
Verzotto comes from Brixen in north Italy; just a short distance from one of the fashion capitals of the world, Milan. This has clearly had an effect on him, as he wears many classic Italian fashion brands like Gucci and Versace. Linen suits and supple designer shoes are a favourite of this Italian; when he’s not bearing it all in the pool that is.
Tyson Gay – USA
Tyson Gay is one of the United States best athletes, and Usain Bolt’s competition in both the 100m and 200m. Before Bolt came onto the scene, he dominated men’s sprinting, and is hoping to medal this year in Rio.
In the world of fashion, Tyson Gay pulls off a more relaxed style, wearing jeans and loose fitting tees and polo shirts. However, like most American’s, he favours a well-pressed suit and has pulled off the more unique suit looks. Including short suit trousers, and mesh shirts underneath a dark blazer.
Make sure you tune into the Olympics over the next two weeks to catch our most stylish athletes in action. On Saturday 6th you can see Louis Smith in action and Linus Butt in Germany’s first hockey match against Canada. Should they make it there, the men’s pommel horse final is on Sunday 14th, and the hockey final is scheduled for 9pm on Thursday 18th.
Maicol Verzotto will be challenging Tom Daley in the 10m diving finals on Monday 8th August. Tyson Gay and Usain Bolt compete in the preliminary rounds of the 100m on the 13th, with the final taking place at 2.25am on Monday 15th.
These stylish athletes may be wearing something completely different to what’s mentioned above during the Olympics. Nonetheless, they’re all sure to look good and impress in their relevant events. Get the dates in your diary and don’t miss out.
