Fred Perry’s Bradley Wiggins Wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year
Olympic gold medal winning cyclist and the first Englishman to win The Tour de France, Bradley Wiggins, beat a Ryder Cup Winner and ten other medal winning Team GB members to the 2012 BBC Sports Personality of The Year Award.
Heptathlete Jessica Ennis was voted second, while US Open winner Andy Murray came in third place at the star studded event held at a packed out ExCeL Arena in London.
It was the first time an event of any significance has been staged back within the grounds of the Olympic Village since London 2012 Olympic Games ended. Ironically, it was those very games which provided many of the fantastic memories relived on Sunday Night. Presented by the formidable line up of Gary Lineker, Sue Barker and Clare Balding, the show culminated with man-of-the-moment Bradley Wiggins scooping the award which was not only down to both of his amazing victories in Tour de France & the London 2012 Olympics but, perhaps more importantly down to his personality!
In the lead up to the show many people in the entertainment, media and sports business were suggesting victory would be all the more special given the incredibly positive publicity sport received throughout 2012!
