How To

Opinion

The t-shirt and chinos combo is without a doubt one of the easiest but most powerful duos that every man should have in his wardrobe. One of the easiest ways to look great and still feel comfortable in the summer is this timeless combination with your favourite pair of trainers and you’re good to go!

The only problem then comes when the chillier seasons roll around. This combo is perfect on its own when you’re relaxing with your mates on a hot summer’s day, but when heading out on a cold evening in December, it just isn’t going to cut it.

Worry not, though, we can still make this work. We’ve put together a couple of ideas so that you can still pull this combo off all year round without looking ridiculous or getting hypothermia…

The secret to making a great t-shirt and chinos combo work no matter what time of the year is all in the layering – it’s as simple as that. It’s just what you choose to layer your combo with that makes or breaks the outfit.

Autumn

Fred Perry Enlarged Tartan Check Shirt Navy | Boss Orange Schino 1 Slim Fit Trousers Grey | Timberland Larchmont Chukka Boots Brown | Lacoste Live Ultra Slim T Shirt White | Levis Line 8 Trucker Denim Jacket Blue

Rocking this combo in the autumn is easy – we’re not quite in minus degrees territory yet (hopefully), so it’s all about picking a few layers that aren’t too heavy just to keep you from getting chilly. Try a flannel shirt left unbuttoned and layer it under a cool denim jacket for a perfect autumnal outfit.

You could swap the shirt out for a zip-up hoodie if it’s raining. We’re going for all the classics here, so why not go the whole hog – leave your trainers at home and instead try a pair of brown boots to complete your look. This is a look that just can’t be beaten.

Winter

Lacoste Slim Fit Chino Trousers Beige | Fred Perry Fishtail Parka Jacket Brown | Tommy Hilfiger Icon T Shirt White | Fred Perry V Neck Merino Wool Cardigan Navy

When we’re really dealing with sub-zero temperatures, it’s time to bring out the big guns. Everyone should have a parka in their wardrobe as the ultimate defence against those icy days throughout winter, so throw one of those on and you’ll be ready to look good no matter how cold it gets.

Layer a thick cardigan underneath – that way you add a useful layer of warmth while still being able to show off the t-shirt you have. Sorted.

Spring/Summer

Michael Kors Sleek T Shirt White | Armani Exchange Shorts Brown | Ralph Lauren Classic Baseball Cap Grey | Lyle & Scott Garment Dye Shirt Green

When spring rolls back around it means that sunshine isn’t too far off. Why not pair your t-shirt and chinos combo with a plain button-up shirt in an earth tone like brown or olive for a sweet casual look.

Add a baseball cap to your ensemble to really hammer this relaxed fit home. You could even mix things up with your chinos and go for a cropped pair for something a little different!
