Style Icon – Richard Madden

Written by: Bronwen Collins | September 26, 2018.

Richard Madden has won an army of admirers since the Bodyguard drama aired on BBC One, but his bonafide heartthrob status has been around for a while, featuring in other big hits such as Game of Thrones and Cinderella.

With his TV fashion game on point, we thought it prudent to have a look at what Richard wears when he’s not acting as the Home Secretary’s brooding bodyguard. Making him Mainline Menswear’s latest style icon.

All Black

The first look is simple and easy to pull off. All black makes these casual pieces look smart when combined into one dark outfit. All you need is a t-shirt, leather jacket and jeans – and remember, stick to black.

Match This Look: We recommend a Ralph Lauren crew neck t-shirt, paired with some Edwin slim tapered jeans, finished off with a leather jacket by Hugo Boss and some black shoes.

Layered Up

A similar look, but a little brighter. Richard Madden has nailed layering with this outfit whilst still managing to keep things simple. Clearly, plain t-shirts are a staple piece of his wardrobe, and with good reason! They’re easy to match and the perfect base for a layered look.

Match This Look: A white t-shirt like this double pack from Gant teamed with this denim jacket from Vivienne Westwood

Suited

This next outfit is suave to the max. The classic black suit is given an upgrade with a matching waistcoat. Simple, crisp, and with no frills – Madden flawlessly proves that you don’t have to make things complicated to pull off a three-piece suit. Take Richard’s example and follow suit!

Match This look: Vivienne Westwood does the work for you with their waistcoat jacket in grey.

Camel Coats

Black t-shirt and jeans again, but this time the outfit is completed with a camel coloured coat. If you hadn’t already figured it out, camel is a colour that matches camel hair, with a rich, yellow undertone that makes it a warmer brown than similar shades, such as umber.

Camel is a versatile colour and easily paired with neutral shades like soft browns, blues and blacks. Definitely, the best choice to experiment with this year. What at first is seemingly a simple colour can become an anchor for your formal wear – i.e., a double-breasted overcoat, the much-needed addition if you want to nail the Wall Street stockbroker vibe.

Match This Look: A thin black jumper by Ralph Lauren, black chinos by Farah and then matched with a camel coat or jacket.

Last Words

So how can we summarise Richard Madden’s style? Plain t-shirts, unassuming cuts, subtle colours and a fair bit of suave. Don’t overthink things if you want to dress like the most sought-after bodyguard in the country, and keep things simple.
